Sinopsis

Shipping Art and Art Materials is a handbook for research on Mediterranean ports. Anyone who wants to understand how the interaction between merchants and artisans worked in the great maritime capitals of the Mediterranean should consult this book, which is divided into 6 parts dedicated to 6 main Mediterranean capitals: Genoa, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Cadiz and Lisbon. Through pairs of specialized essays by historians of naval economy (and of “seafarers”) and social historians of art and artistic production, the reader will follow an imaginary but realistic naval itinerary from Italy to Portugal and viceversa, through the institutions and places that allowed the union of these two societies. The text is a vademecum for future research and clearly illustrates the sources available for the historical reconstruction of the art trade (of simple or processed materials) between Genoa and Lisbon in the modern age.
